The Breakaway: Bay Area Hip Hop Dance History with Carla Service
September 15 @ 8:00pm - 9:00pm PDT
Description from the Breakaway website:
We are thrilled to invite Carla Service, a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher, event producer, and, for over three decades, a mentor to Oakland youth, to speak about her personal perspective of the history and evolution of hip hop in the Bay Area, as well as its roots in other historical African American art forms (such as vernacular jazz). She will also be leading us through some dance demos to get us moving!
Carla Service founded Dance-A-Vision Entertainment, an arts organization with a broad platform of artist advocacy, dance education and youth mentoring. Thirty-plus years later, Dance-A-Vision has expanded to include event production, entertainment consulting and choreographic commissions for both national and international stages. And the outreach program, which began with just a few youth, has grown into a renowned dance education arm, still going strong today at the Malonga Casquelord Center for the Arts, formerly the Alice Arts Center, in downtown Oakland. Carla produces, co-produces, and helps organize many events and festivals around the Bay Area, including the Oakland Art and Soul Festival, Oakland Dance Festival, and many more.
