HMD’s 2020 Bridge Project POWER SHIFT: Improvisation, Activism, and Community, Dance Mission Theater & Kambara+ present
An ⧫ ANTI-RACISM TRAINING FOR THE DANCE COMMUNITY ⧫
facilitated by Beatrice Thomas.
This training is for dancers, choreographers, curators, funders, critics, educators, activists, and nonprofit professionals affiliated with the dance community. It is also open to the general public who wish to contribute to anti-racism and racial justice work within the context of the performing arts.

BEATRICE THOMAS is an arts & equity consultant, multi-disciplinary social practice artist & performer. Thomas has worked in administrative, curatorial, grantmaking, & educational roles for municipal agencies, community colleges, galleries & non-profits. Thomas leads workshops & facilitates dialogues on equity based grantmaking, queer arts, & cultural equity. They have served as Program Officer for San Francisco’s Cultural Equity Grants program, Program Manager for First Night Austin, an interdisciplinary, urban, arts festival, & Chair of the Austin Art & Public Places Panel.
Currently, they are working on a national capacity building project with L.A.N.E/NPN (Leveraging Arts Networks for Equity), designing & facilitating a Leadership Residency for Queer and Trans Artists of Color at SafeHouse for the Performing Arts & coaching culturally specific Oakland based arts organizations with the Akonadi Foundation. Thomas is committed to integrating exceptional art from queer communities & culturally specific communities on national stages. Mx. Thomas received a BA from Hampshire College & a MFA from the University of Texas.

ABOUT THE CO-PRESENTERS
DANCE MISSION THEATER connects and empowers diverse Bay Area communities and artists through all aspects of dance and dance theater, including the production of new works, instruction, and performance. We are an artist-driven, feminist organization dedicated to building community, addressing social justice issues, exploring cultural identities, promoting inclusivity, and creating a more peaceful world through collective action. Many female artists, artists of color, and culturally specific ensembles consider Dance Mission to be their artistic home. Master teachers of dance and music have created a thriving inter-generational community celebrating cultural traditions, welcoming students of all backgrounds. POWER SHIFT: Improvisation, Activism, and Community invites artists and activists to share the practice and performance of improvisation. Co-curated by Cherie Hill, Hope Mohr, and Karla Quintero, POWER SHIFT brings you inside the improvisational practices of Black/African American, Latinx/Latin American, Asian American, female-identifying and queer improvisers and social justice activists. The program highlights voices from African dance, jazz aesthetics, social and street dance, contemporary forms, and Capoeira.
POWER SHIFT is about more than performance. A wide array of intensives and workshops at the intersection of dance and social action offer opportunities to build and share tools for the creative process. In these spaces, we will move and imagine together. We will cultivate power and resilience in the face of shifting and uncertain landscapes.
